General Sponsorship Requirements
Residency
Sponsors must reside in Canada during the sponsorship process. Canadian citizens living abroad must demonstrate the intention to return to Canada when the sponsored family member becomes a permanent resident.
Financial Obligations
Sponsors must agree to financially support the sponsored person and ensure they do not require social assistance. The duration of this financial commitment varies by category:
- Spouse/Partner: 3 years
- Dependent Child: 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first
- Parents/Grandparents: 20 years
Income Requirements
For sponsoring parents and grandparents, sponsors must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for each of the three taxation years preceding the application. This income threshold is based on family size, including the sponsor, their immediate family, and the sponsored individuals. Sponsors may include their co-signer's income to meet this requirement.
Application Process
Sponsors must submit both the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application for their relatives simultaneously. Applications are processed by IRCC, and sponsors are notified of decisions. Processing times vary by category and individual circumstances.
Additional Considerations
Quebec Residents: Sponsors residing in Quebec must meet the province's specific immigration sponsorship requirements, including signing an undertaking with the provincial government.
Ineligibility Factors: Individuals may be ineligible to sponsor if they:
- Are in prison
- Have declared bankruptcy and are not discharged
- Receive social assistance for reasons other than disability
- Were themselves sponsored as a spouse/partner within the last 5 years
