Citizenship Applications

The final step in your journey to fully integrating into Canadian life

Back to Services

Becoming a Canadian citizen is the final step in your journey to fully integrating into Canadian life. Citizenship provides the opportunity to participate in the country's democratic process, access one of the world's strongest passports, and secure a permanent connection to Canada. It is a significant milestone that goes beyond permanent residency, offering stability, security, and new opportunities.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants may qualify for Canadian citizenship if they meet the following requirements:

Permanent Resident Status

Valid permanent resident status in Canada is required.

Physical Presence in Canada

Applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) within the past five years.

  • Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person can count as one-half day toward physical presence, up to a maximum of 365 days.
  • Time spent outside Canada as a Crown servant or the family member of a Crown servant may also count toward residency.

Language Proficiency

Applicants aged 18-54 must demonstrate proficiency in English or French.

Knowledge of Canada

Applicants aged 18-54 must pass a citizenship test, showcasing their understanding of Canada's history, values, institutions, and symbols.

Good Standing

Applicants must not have any prohibitions, such as a criminal record, that would make them ineligible for citizenship.

Why Become a Canadian Citizen?

Canadian citizenship comes with unique privileges and responsibilities that distinguish it from permanent residency:

Participate in Canada's Democracy

Citizens can vote in elections and run for public office, giving them a voice in shaping Canada's leadership and policies.

Hold a Canadian Passport

Enjoy the freedom of visa-free travel to 187 destinations, access to work and study opportunities abroad, and consular support when traveling.

Secure and Stable Status

Citizenship is permanent and does not require residency obligations, unlike permanent residency, which depends on maintaining a physical presence in Canada.

Unrestricted Entry into Canada

Citizens are guaranteed the right to live, work, and travel in Canada without risk of losing their status.

Exclusive Career Opportunities

Certain government and high-security roles are available only to Canadian citizens.

Pass Citizenship to Future Generations

Citizens can pass their status to children born abroad, unlike permanent residents who must sponsor children born outside Canada.
